The short version: this is a personal website. There are no accounts, forms, ads or newsletters. The only thing that sets cookies is Google Analytics, and only if you say yes.
Who is responsible
Jeremy Rigney, Dublin, Ireland, is the data controller for this website. For any question about your data, or to use any of the rights below, email jeremy.rigney@gmail.com.
Google Analytics
With your consent, this site uses Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which pages get read. It records things like the pages you view, roughly where you are (country and city), the device and browser you use, and the site that sent you. It does not tell me who you are, and I never try to identify anyone from it.
Google Analytics runs in Google’s Consent Mode. Until you choose, and if you say no, it sets no cookies and reads none. Your browser still sends Google a basic, cookieless ping when a page loads. That ping carries no identifier that links one visit to the next, and Google uses these pings only to estimate overall numbers. If you say yes, Google Analytics sets the cookies listed below so that it can recognise a return visit.
Google acts as my processor. The service is provided by Google Ireland Limited, and data may be transferred to Google LLC in the United States, which is certified under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework. Google Analytics does not log or store IP addresses for visitors in the EU. Analytics data is kept for 2 months and then deleted. More detail is in Google’s privacy information.
Legal basis: your consent (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR, and Regulation 5(3) of the Irish ePrivacy Regulations, S.I. No. 336 of 2011).
Cookies and browser storage
_ga: Google Analytics. Tells one visitor apart from another. Set only if you say yes. Lasts 2 years._ga_6G0WFV4TS8: Google Analytics. Keeps track of the current visit. Set only if you say yes. Lasts 2 years.jr-consent(browser storage, not sent anywhere): remembers your yes or no so you are not asked on every page. Strictly necessary. You are asked again after 6 months.eclipse2026.location(browser storage, not sent anywhere): only if you use “Use my location” on the Eclipse page. Your coordinates stay in your browser and are never sent to me or anyone else.
Changing your mind
You can withdraw or give consent at any time, as easily as you gave it: use Cookie settings, here or at the foot of any page. Saying no removes the Google Analytics cookies from your browser. Withdrawing consent does not affect anything collected while it was given.
Hosting and other services
The site is hosted on GitHub Pages. Like any web server, GitHub receives your IP address when you load a page and may keep it in its logs for security. See GitHub’s privacy statement.
Some pages load fonts, scripts, map tiles or live data from other services, such as Google Fonts, cdnjs, unpkg, CARTO and OpenStreetMap, and public science and transport data feeds. Those services receive your IP address because your browser has to ask them for the files. This site doesn’t use any of them to set cookies or track you. These requests are made because the site has a legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR) in working and looking right.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access your personal data, and to have it corrected, erased or restricted. You can also object to its use and ask for a copy you can take elsewhere. Email me to use any of these. Because analytics data is pseudonymous, I may not be able to find the records that belong to you.
If you are unhappy with how your data is handled, you can complain to the Data Protection Commission, Ireland’s supervisory authority, at dataprotection.ie.
Changes
If this site starts using anything new that needs your consent, this page will be updated and you will be asked again.
